First night of the new semester
((2006-01-05 - 8:30 p.m.))
OK, I just had to share the insanity that was my day. For a few days, our college's website wouldn't allow me to access the classes I teach, my class rosters, nothing. This morning, I was able to log on, and found that instead of teaching the Basic Photography class I had prepared for, I've suddenly been switched to Advanced Digital Photography, like, four days in advance of starting the class!! So, freaking out, I came home from work early (luckily, my boss and his wife teach at the same college in the evenings as well and let me out), and looked up the textbook. They had the wrong one listed for me to get!! So I had to call all around the college for an hour to find out what the correct book was. I put together a quick syllabus, as this is a class I've never taught, and when I went to print it out ten minutes before I had to leave, my printer ran out of ink. FI steamed my clothes for me while I freaked out and swore at my printer, so I restarted, and my computer started crashing. Finally, FI was able to load the syllabus onto a jumpdrive for me to take to class and print out, but the jumpdrive kept coming up as being empty when we tried it on another computer. I was able to email the syllabus to myself eventually, and got out the door to arrive ten minutes before class started. My students were all waiting in the hall, and we had to wait another ten minutes for the security guard to come unlock the classroom. Then I couldn't log into the faculty computer to get my email!! I had to use one of the students' computers that she had logged into to print the syllabus, and remember how to print from a computer with a mouse with only one big button rather than two. I got the stupid thing printed out, ran down to the department copier, and made ten copies, ran back to the classroom and handed them out. On the way, I stopped at a water fountain. It ran for about a half a second, then the water fountain stopped making water. I didn't have the text yet, and neither did 90% of my students, so I couldn't even teach a class. Sigh. It was like that nightmare when you show up at school for the first day, but you don't know for which class, or even which room that class would be held in. Once again, I claim FI and my life is cursed by gremlins. Needed to vent! :) Brooke
